Stress Management
Caregivers Stress Management is an interactive class designed to inspire the caregiver to take time for themselves using complementary therapies to provide relaxation, such as Aromatherapy, deep breathing, herbal teas and other herbal uses, flower essences, massage and more. We will look at the physiological effects that stress causes on the body and ways we can reduce our stressors to better care for our patients, residents and clients. This is a hands on class where students will make and take home samples of some of the relaxation methods discussed, such as bath salts, an essential oil and an herbal tea.

Death and Dying
For most people, coping with a loved one's terminal health condition and eventual death can be very difficult. However, as we learn about the physical and emotional aspects of this very natural process, we can help ourselves and other along this journey. In Death and Dying we will discuss the physical changes of the dying process. Palliative and hospice care will be addressed, along with the physical comfort measures we, as healthcare workers and family members, can provide. Additionally, the emotional challenges of the individual, family, and caregiver will be discussed, and we will learn how to deal positively with those challenges. A brief discussion about legal/ethical issues (living will, permanently vegetative state, etc.) will be included. Many of the skills learned will be practiced together.
Death and Dying is being presented by Susan Anderson, RB, BSN. Susan has been an RN for 23 years. She has worked in a variety of health care settings, including acute care (ICU), community, and education. Her interest in end-of-life issues began with employement at the City of Hope, a national comprehensive cancer center located in Duarte, California.
The Aging Process
Aging begins the moment we are born! But what can we expect as we reach our "senior years"? Can we slow down this inevitable process? If so, how? In The Aging Process, we will learn about the influences of age progression and which ones can be controlled. We'll discuss the body changes that occur, different diseases common to the elderly, and how to help ourselves and others adjust to these conditions. To further increase our understanding, we will experience what it's like to have certain ailments of the aged. Additionally, we will practice skills to help us deal with our client's limitations.
